SUSTAINABLE AGROFORESTRYAND FORESTS CONSERVATION SERVICES
INTRODUCTION
Expansion of agricultural land and a variety of human activities have led to deforestation and land degradation in many parts of the world. If this continues, the potential contribution of forests to economic development and ecological stability will not be realized. Developing new natural resource management techniques through sustainable agroforestry to address such devastating environmental degradation is important for our rapidly growing world.
Agroforestry is the integration of trees in the farmng systems for maximum benefits and at the same time ensuring environmental protection. These are highly innovative agroforestry techniques that involves selection of high value germplasm of fruit trees, non timber forests products and medicinal plants for multiplication and integration in the farming systems. The approach involves a participatory training in :
- Germplasm selection and collection,
- Nursery establishment
- Grafting
- Marcotting
- Rooting of leafy plants
- Rapid multiplication of plantain/banana plantlets
- Group dynamics
- Marketing
- Integration in the farming systems and management. These involves plants such as avocado pears, kolanuts, passion fruits, safou , bush mangoes, njangsang, mangoes, guavas, citrus etc.
Photo presentation of various techniques in vegetative propagation to acquire improved planting materials and secondly actions on integration, forest conservation and climate change mitigation.
Grafting of avocado pears
Grafted avocado pear tree
NB: Graft is possible with avocado pears, mangoes, bush mangoes, citrus etc.
Marcotting
Ready for direct planting in the field after 2 months
NB: marcotting is possible with kola nuts, mangoes, citrus, bush mangoes, safou, apples etc.
Rapid multiplication of plantains / bananas plantlets and its associated value chain development.
Rooting of leafy using cutting in a non mist propagator.
NB: rooting of leafy cuttings is possible with passion fruits, citrus, safou, apples etc.
Development of bee farming
Tree nursery layout with non mist and giant propagator
Prunus Africana and voacanga nursery (medicinal plants)
Students learning tree propagation techniques
Integration of non timber forest products such as bush mangoes, njangsang and prunus Africana in plantains, cocoyams, coffee and cocoa farms
NB: rooting of leafy cuttings is possible with passion fruits, citrus, safou, apples etc.
Ranch development with grevilea robusta, guatamala, bracaria and elephant stock.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
- Development/Partitioning of land with Grevilea Robuster.
- The land partitioned into 1 ha each with grevilea robusta seedlings planted at distances of 2m each round.
- For purpose of accessibility, a road of 4m wide will be provided all round the ranch.
- A giant tree nursery of grevilea robusta have to be established on- site to avoid long distance transportation and damages of the seedlings.
IMPORTANCE OF THE GREVILEA ROBUSTA TREE FOR ANIMAL RANCH
- Grevilea robusta is an environmental friendly tree.
- It’s a fast growing agro- forestry specy.
- It’s a cambion wood tree suitable for all furniture.
- It provides a good shed in the farm.
- Creates refreshing environment for cattle during harsh climatic conditions.
